Assignment Overview:
Critique a journal article reporting a mixed-methods study. The article for this assignment is Moss, H., Lynch, J, & O’Donoghue, J. (2018). Exploring the perceived health benefits of singing in a choir: an international cross-sectional mixed-methods study. Perspectives in Public Health, 138(3), 160–168. The authors have explained very clearly how they conducted their large online survey.
They have also reported what they see as the strengths and limitations of their study. Draw on their insights, course content, and your own analytical skills as you respond to the following questions. Use the questions below to guide your critique of the study. 1. Sampling methodology
- Examine issues related to Moss, Lynch, and O’Donaghue’s sampling method with regards to the quantitative results being generalizable to the larger target population.
- Demonstrate how the sampling frame may have affected their survey results. In this study, the sampling frame is evident from their recruitment strategy of sending invitations to participate.
- Propose a more rigorous sampling method that would address some of their survey’s limitations for quantitative research. Briefly describe how your proposed sampling method could have been administered in their study.
2. Qualitative methodology
- Evaluate the survey’s qualitative component by identifying its strengths and shortcomings. Examine issues of rigor regarding the questionnaire items, mode of administration, and other survey features as they relate to qualitative research.
- Propose a different qualitative data collection method that would enable richer, deeper findings addressing the same primary purpose as Moss, Lynch, and O’Donaghue’s survey.
- Compare and contrast your proposed qualitative method to the online survey that was done. What are the advantages it may have over the online survey? Highlight any challenges you anticipate that would make your proposed method harder to conduct than the online survey.
3. Quantitative methodology
- Evaluate the questionnaire’s quantitative items. What were their strengths and shortcomings? Examine measurement issues regarding the questionnaire items as they relate to descriptive quantitative research.
- Propose two hypotheses for a field experiment as the follow up to this study. Select your dependent and independent variables based on the results of Moss, Lynch, and O’Donaghue’s survey. Your two hypotheses should follow the traditional conventions of positivist hypotheses wording.
- Compare and contrast your proposed field experiment with the survey that was done. In what ways might your experiment contribute more precise data than the survey? Why are such field experiments typically less popular than online surveys?
