Hence, this section aims to provide students with a basic overview of the major theories and concepts that have been developed in order to understand how human development progresses through life (and beyond). Students will also be introduced to the important distinction between chronological ageing, which is measured by time, and biological or “functional” ageing, which results from physical changes in both body and mind.
The broad multi-disciplinary perspective on the ageing process is not just about physiology. Intrinsic to its make-up are economics, sociology and cultural attitudes.
For example, anthropological studies show that menopause in women has a significant social component – where a woman’s reproductive role ends, so too does her access to land rights and economic prestige within the wider society which may result in elderly women being seen as less of an asset.
