Imagine this is your first year as an educator. to a class of 10 infants (2 to 18 months old). You are tasked to plan and design a physical environment of 200 square meters, focusing on the play space, to optimise your children’s play and development. From your perspective as the class teacher, ask yourself an important question to begin your work – “How do I want the children to use this space for play?” Draw and relate your responses to what you have learned about the key ideas in the arrangement and selection of materials when making educational decisions for the play/learning spaces.

1. In your planning and design for the group of infants (2 to 18 months), the play space has to be clearly demarcated between locomotive and non-locomotive.

2. Choose ONE of the infant floor plans (play spaces) below to plan and design the physical environment below: ( a picture of 4 different layouts given to choose 1 from it)

  • Do not move the location of the doors and pillars in the given layout
  • Use a PowerPoint slide to design the floor plan, which does not need to be drawn to scale but the rough proportion should still be maintained;
