University | National University of Singapore (NUS) |
Subject | GET 1042: Sky and Telescopes |
Introduction
Most of this assignment involves actual observations. Regardless of the weather, you are expected to plan for and attempt actual observations. While the status of our regular stargazing sessions will depend on the prevailing safe-distancing rules on the day itself, many of these activities can be done on your own, even during the lockdown.
You are to complete any two activities. With the exception of Activity D (Navigation by the Sun), you may complete the same activity twice on different targets.
Part I: These are activities that can be done on your own without the use of NUS-provided equipment. With the exception of Activity C (Archive Images), you may observe in a group subject to all prevailing safe distancing rules but your image selection, data analysis, and image processing are to be done individually.
Activity A: Wide Field Astrophotography
Astrophotography using an ordinary camera. Your target here will be entire constellations or asterisms. Additional processing may be required.
Activity B: Star Trails
Astrophotography using a DSLR or film camera without tracking. Additional processing is required.
Activity C: Archive Images
Reprocess images from scientific archives to create pretty pictures. Many of these images are in monochrome form and just need a final processing step.
Activity D: Navigation by the Sun
Use the position of the sun at noon to determine your position on the earth. This does not involve image processing but may require some simple data analysis.
Part II: These are activities that are best done in a group with NUS-provided equipment. This will only be available when we can address all logistics and safe-distancing issues associated with equipment loans. For these activities, you may observe in a group subject to all prevailing safe distancing rules but your image selection, data analysis, and image processing are to be done
individually.
Activity E: Deep Sky Long Exposure Astrophotography
Astrophotography through the telescope using a DSLR or other suitable camera. Additional processing is required, but you can potentially get much better images, especially from a dark site or with good weather.
Activity F: Lucky Shot Astrophotography
Take pictures of planets or the Moon using a specialized astrophotography camera. Involves some additional processing, but the setup is simple.
