Assignment Description

“Interview with a Difference” involves interviewing a person (please interview only one person) who belongs to an underrepresented group experiencing biases or discrimination. The person should be at least 18 years old, not a family member or a relative. You are required to use course concepts covered in SU2-3 to document your experience and learnings from interviewing this person.

Here is a list of questions you may ask your interviewee:

  • Can you share a situation where you felt stereotyped or discriminated against?
  • How do biases manifest in your daily life (e.g., work, public spaces, education)?
  • How was it growing as a member of your social group?
  • Are there any misconceptions about your social group that you wish people understood?
  • What strategies do you use to cope with or challenge biases?
  • Have you noticed any positive changes in societal attitudes recently?
  • In your view, what could individuals or communities do to combat stereotypes about your group?
  • Are there policies, programs, or actions that could create greater inclusion?

Listed below are some examples (not exhaustive) of potential interviewees that you may consider interviewing:

  • Interview a member of an ethnic/religious minority group (different from your own ethnic group).
  • Interview a female in a senior/leadership position in an organisation from a male-dominated industry.
  • Interview a senior colleague working in a certain department (e.g., IT, frontline) with a majority of millennials and Gen Zs; or a young manager leading a team older than he/she is.
  • Interview a member of a minority sexual orientation group.
  • Interview a person with physical/mental disability (ability minority group).

Your essay should include clearly labelled following sections:

  1. Brief Background of IntervieweeYou must provide a brief background of your interviewee using a pseudonym; how do you know this person? What is his/her main occupation? How long have you known him/her? Specify which minority group(s) the interviewee belongs to and how the interviewee differs from you.

Experience with Stereotypes, Prejudice or Discrimination and Ways to ReduceUse course concepts to distinguish your interviewee’s experiences with stereotypes, prejudice or discrimination in their own life. Appraise THREE (3) ways by which stereotype and prejudice experienced by members of your interviewee’s social group can be reduced.

  3. Learning and ApplicationEvaluate this experience in light of Allport’s (1954) “contact hypothesis”. Reflect on the extent to which this interviewing experience has changed your perspective in any way. What learnings from this experience can you apply in your personal and professional life?

  4. Language and ReferencesUse language that is logical, grammatically correct and makes ideas flow coherently. Support your claims with relevant examples or evidence. It is not enough to cite the study guide in answering parts 2 & 3. Provide at least THREE (3) references in APA (7th edition) format from journal articles or book chapters (excluding the textbooks). Always cite credible sources of information. Blog entries, online student papers or theses, and websites like Wikipedia do not count.
