Each entry should be approximate, although variations can be expected, and you should assess in turn four topics,

namely strategy

the corporate organization

core capabilities

and the role of government (for each multinational)

An introduction

The firms to be analyzed are:
1) Secom or a major multinational Japanese bank or a major Japanese service multinational of your choice, and

2) Hitachi Technologies, and

3) Huawei Technologies, and

4) Samsung Electronics.

When preparing your answer, please read, investigate, and analyze the following four aspects for each of the MNEs and its country of origin:

• Strategy
• Corporate organization MN3216K Asian Pacific Business
• Core capabilities
• The role of government

Suggested Analysis and Structure for Assignment 2: Report

After a short introduction, the individual corporate case studies will follow and each looking where relevant at strategy, management structure (corporate organization), core capabilities, and role of government. The last section is an overview or conclusion of your cases, giving a general picture of Asia Pacific Multinationals and the four factors analyzed.

Please note that when you are analyzing, for example, Japanese multinationals in the electronics industry, your comparisons do not have to be limited to Japanese rivals. Comparisons with the Asia Pacific and European multinationals may be more apt and useful. The same point applies to Korean, Chinese, and Taiwanese firms/or Indian firms.

Consider a number of perspectives, including the aims of Japanese multinationals in relation to global strategies; the aims of Korean and Chinese multinationals and international business strategies; differences between industries and types of business; the degree of global versus regional control, and changes in operational control over time;

the competitive advantages of these multinationals compared to those of rivals; variations in management, organization, and operations between the home country and host nations;

the ability of Japanese, Korean and Chinese multinationals to compete in Europe, Asia and North America, and their ability to adapt to changes in policy and markets; and the policies of host governments and the relevance of the EU.

You will have the opportunity to ask lecturers questions on all these issues, and we will be discussing some corporate cases and their assessments during the RHUL lecture visit and the local lecturer should be able to discuss them in class. You should use the literature on international and Asia Pacific business, available on the Moodle website, to help provide insights.
