Assignment Overview:

You are required to access a journal article entitled “Creating false memories: Remembering words not presented in lists” from Google Scholar and answer questions that require you to identify various components of the research article.

Question 1: General Information

1. State the title of the article.
2. State the name(s) of the author(s) of the article.
3. State the name of the journal, the year of publication, volume number, and page numbers.

Question 2: Introduction

The Introduction presents existing theories and relevant past research studies providing the bases for the current research problem. Statements of the expected results are made at the end of the Introduction.

1. Identify the main aim of this research study.
2. Briefly summarise what the introduction says about past research on false memory.

Question 3: Method

The Method section of an experimental study is usually divided into the following subsections- Participants, Materials/Apparatus, Design, and Procedure. The present journal article does not have a Design section for Experiment 1.

1. Summarise how Experiment 1 was carried out, using your own words as far as possible. Be sure to include the following details: [Word limit = 300]
   • How the six lists of words and recognition test were constructed
   • How the experiment was conducted
2. Concisely explain why the authors conducted Experiment 2.

Question 4: Results

The Results section reports the descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the statistical analysis can be complicated and difficult to understand especially if you are not familiar with the statistical tests used. For the purpose of this assignment, let us not be too concerned with the statistical analyses involved.

1. State the findings from Experiment 1 which allowed the authors to conclude that the critical non-presented items were recalled at about the same level as items actually presented and that this high rate of false recall was not due to participants guessing wildly.
2. Briefly summarise the overall results from the two experiments.

Question 5: Discussion

The Discussion section presents a discussion of the results with respect to the research question set out in the Introduction. It also addresses the theoretical implications of the results.

1. Briefly summarise the three features which the authors say distinguish their findings from prior research.
2. The authors argue that their findings have indirect implications for the issue of false memories in real life. Briefly summarise their argument.
3. Briefly define and describe the concept of “long-term memory” and give an example of this concept. [Word limit = 150 words]

Question 6: Abstract

The Abstract is a concise summary of the whole article and appears at the beginning of the article. It contains key information about the research study such as the purpose/aim of the study, the research design, research hypotheses, results, and some concluding statements about the implications of the results.

The References section lists the full reference of all sources cited or referred to in the study.

1. Apply the APA style of formatting references by presenting the full reference of the following three items as you would expect them to appear in the References section:
