Read the following information before answering the questions.

Ms. Blossom is a teacher at Cornerstone Primary School. A month ago, a 10-year-old boy, Benedict, joined her class. Ms. Blossom has been struggling with managing Benedict’s behaviors in class since then. She has recorded her observations on the Antecedent Behaviour-Consequence (ABC) chart and came to you for advice. Below is a snippet of the ABC data collected by Ms. Blossom.

3 Oct 2024 8:15am Assembly Ms. Blossom instructed Benedict to keep his storybook in his bag. Benedict shouted and showed his fist to Ms. Blossom. Ms. Blossom ignored Benedict and walked away. Benedict continued to read his storybook.
3 Oct 2024 10:30am Physical Education (PE) Benedict demanded the ball from his classmate. Classmate did not pass it to Benedict. Benedict pushed his classmate and snatched the ball. PE teacher scolded Benedict. Benedict ignored and continued playing with the ball.
10 Oct 2024 9:45am Math Lesson Mr. Koh stopped Benedict from touching the slide projector. Benedict shouted, banged the table, and walked out. Mr. Koh instructed Benedict to come back, but he did not comply. Mr. Koh notified the discipline master.
11 Oct 2024 9:30am English Lesson Benedict left his seat to walk around the class. Ms. Blossom blocked his path and gave instructions. Benedict shouted at Ms. Blossom and pushed her. Ms. Blossom continued to instruct Benedict to return to his seat. Benedict complied unwillingly.
11 Oct 2024 10:15am English Lesson Ms. Blossom told the students that break time was over. Benedict was instructed to keep his book. Benedict shouted and banged his table. Ms. Blossom informed Benedict that the book would be confiscated if he didn’t comply. He complied grudgingly.
14 Jun 2024 8:45am Physical Education (PE) The students were instructed to queue up and take turns to kick the ball into the goal post. Benedict pushed his classmates and cut the queue. PE teacher scolded Benedict, but Benedict ignored.

 

  1. Examine and describe TWO (2) implications that Benedict’s behavioural challenges have for learning. (16 marks)
  2. Based on the ABC data gathered, identify the function of Benedict’s challenging behaviours and suggest an appropriate replacement behaviour. Describe how you would teach Benedict the replacement behaviour. (13 marks)
  3. Create an appropriate intervention plan to address Benedict’s challenging behaviours. In your response, describe and elaborate on:
    • TWO (2) ‘proactive’ strategies
    • TWO (2) ‘reactive’ strategies

     

Note: Teaching of replacement behaviour should NOT be included as one of the strategies in question 1c as it has already been covered in question 1b. (56 marks)
