Assessment 1: Peer Review
Peer review “is understood to mean the education arrangement in which students consider or evaluate the value, quality of success of work produced by their fellow students and provide each other with feedback” (Van den Berg, 2006, p. 341).
This Assessment is about attending and participating in each session via the LMS Forums. It focuses on your ability to support your peers actively. This will be assessed by:
- Attendance
- Evidence of preparation
- Contribution to general discussion
- Review of Student Proposals
- Additional academic contributions
- Willingness to seek peer review and;
- Engagement in the constructive support and critique of the work of your peers via LMS discussion forums and sessional discussions.
All students in the Unit are registered with LMS and can use the facility and potential feedback.
University staff will monitor LMS and the discussion forums to provide feedback and suggestions. However, as this piece of Assessment is focused on peer review, we expect students to undertake this role. Please post only Unit related content on the discussion forums. If you require personal contact with your Supervisor, you should email or use Teams Meetings.
Assessment 2: Project Proposal
The Project Proposal establishes and develops your research focus and enables feedback from your peers. It defines your overall research topic and critical directions for developing the research project. This is in 4 stages and involves your input and the input of your Peers.
Due Pre Session 4
- Complete and submit your Proposal with Gannt Chart to the forum. (Form on LMS. Proposal A)
- Provide a Constructive Critique to one of your Peers. (Form on LMS. Proposal B)
Due Post Session 4
Provide a report on the Constructive Critique you received. (Form on LMS. Proposal C)
Assessment 3: Literature Review
The Literature Review is fundamental to the development of your research report. You cannot proceed without reference to academic literature relevant to your topic of study. You must review theoretical platforms and research studies using highly credible literature sources to establish the context and direction for your research and the foundation for analysing your data (secondary or primary). This forms the basis of the final project report.
In your Proposal, you have already begun reviewing the literature to define the boundaries of your research topic and approach. The Literature Review is the next phase where you delve deeper into your topic and endeavour to answer your research question(s), and determine appropriate methodological approaches for your study.
You should refer to research and report writing texts for a discussion of the role of the literature in developing a research project (e.g., Veal, 2011; Jennings, 2010) and to books that target thesis and essay writing for university students (e.g., Anderson and Poole, 2001). The literature review will form one of the ‘chapters’ in your Project Report and contributes to the overall report word count. This assignment should include:
- Literature Review.
- A Figure highlighting your Conceptual Framework
- Your original Proposal and Gannt Chart (Proposal A)
- The Peer review you received (Proposal B)
- Your Critique of the Review you received (Proposal C)
- Your Revised Proposal & Gannt Chart.
The Literature Review (LR)
The Literature Review is the central part of this assignment. Each academic source you cite should be discussed to show how it informs your research and/or how it is expected to inform your analysis. Your final Project Report should draw upon the tourism and related literature, as you should be reading and searching throughout the project. Go to original sources where possible, i.e., peer-reviewed academic journal articles. At this stage of your academic career, you should aim to cite the original sources of information.
The LR is almost like an essay that develops an understanding of the relevant literature. Like an essay, it has a structure and an argument; it is going somewhere and is not simply a descriptive list of items. This is the background research and theory that has gone before and informs your approach. Show how the literature informs your project and draw almost exclusively on current academic research and theory. As part of the LR, you should seek to explore research opportunities and methods.
The LR should finish with the Aims and Objectives of your project and a Figure reflecting your Conceptual Framework for your methodology, research questions and analysis.
Assessment 4: 3 Minute Poster Presentation
During Session 12 of the teaching period, you will be required to provide a 3-minute presentation using a professional e-poster of your research project (pitched to the relevant industry) to fellow students. You should prepare an audio ppt with a single page ppt that presents your poster. Fellow students will form an audience of industry professionals who are interested in the outcomes of your research and will provide peer assessment for a component of this Assessment.
You are required to provide an overview of your project, your methods and conclusions, and answer questions from your audience. You may utilise the feedback to improve your report before submission on the Monday following this Session.
For initial support, see
External students may attend Session 12 for their presentation or prepare a video or audio ppt for submission on the LMS; future sessions will discuss further approaches.
