Learning Outcomes In BMA5104 Global Strategy NUS Assignment
This course is an exciting and unique opportunity to learn how you can use case analysis as a way of developing your conceptual, analytical, decision-making skills. You will also have the chance for discussions with other students who are just like yourself.
At the end of this course you should be able to answer the following:
Assignment Task 1: Understand the basic knowledge and concepts of strategic management and applications in a global context
Strategic management is the responsibility for making decisions to achieve long-term business objectives. It involves achieving short term targets, maintaining ethical standards, and providing full disclosure to the public. Setting strategic objectives requires analysis of both external and internal factors, in order to set achievable goals that are appropriate to an organization’s context (social/cultural environment) while also fulfilling its mission (core purpose). Balanced Scorecards help assess progress towards these already defined metrics in the form of financial, customer satisfaction or quality achievements through analyzing one or more time horizons. Beyond executing actions related to current strategic agreements with partners; it is important for organizations also develop capability.
This means, having the ability to anticipate changes in the environment and potential disruptions to operations before they happen. The goal is to be proactive rather than reactive.
Some organizations use a “scenario planning” process as a way of thinking about future threats and opportunities that might affect their business. This systematic way of exploring different potential futures can help management teams to explore what might happen in different future environments, enabling them to define how they should respond. For example, the Department of Homeland Security uses scenario planning to explore potential threats and opportunities associated with climate change. Scenario planning can be used as a strategic management process that looks out into the future to identify potential disruptions to current operations.
Assignment Task 2: Understand how external environmental issues can have an influence on firm businesses
There are four factors that can influence external environmental issues on firm business
- Those who do not use the product will be impacted by it indirectly. For example, if a company released chemicals into the air, their neighboring town would depend on whether or not they use the said product to know how it affects them; this concern wouldn’t exist for those who don’t deal with said chemical at all because there’s no direct proof of any implications.
- Product-related pollution is unheard of for those who don’t interact with said product enough – even though there’s measurable effects on the environment (habitats and wildlife), these consequences may go unnoticed for those unfamiliar with such practices. However, consumers will most likely become aware of environmental issues once they begin to perpetuate it.
- Consumers can be significantly impacted by the product itself, mainly because it is the direct cause that the environment gets polluted. For example, if a chemical company uses their own employees as ‘test subjects’ for hazardous chemicals without their willingness or knowledge, consumers who are aware of such practices- and choose to buy said product- will instantly be impacted because they take part in the environmental injury, despite not being directly involved with it.
- Inversely, the company that manufactures the products can also be significantly influenced by external factors such as regulations and laws. These rules are commonly put into place by outside forces; once again, the company wouldn’t be directly harmed but would have to abide by the new restrictions.
External environmental factors can influence firms in a variety of ways, but it largely depends on the product that is being released and how it affects those who don’t use it.
Assignment Task 3: Apply and integrate various strategic management concepts and analytical methods to real-life management situations in a corporation
The people in a corporation who take care of the logistical aspect to keep it running efficiently are called managers. The kind of management skills they need to work in such an environment can be divided into two broad categories: planning and control. Within these, there are many concepts that may extend from analytical methods for problem-solving.
Particularly related to fiscal matters, accounting analysis is used by managers when collecting financial data and making decisions based off a company’s balance sheet. Additionally, decision analysts use pricing models to determine pricing strategies for goods or services offered by a firm. Other methods can include SWOT analysis which helps evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats faced by a company at any given point in time. Strategic analysis often includes assessing stakeholder expectations, which are generally financial metrics. Forecasting future business conditions can be done using models such as the time value of money, expected cash flows and internal rate of return.
Running a corporation requires an understanding not only of these concepts but also how to use them practically through various scenarios, where the diagnostic ability is crucial in decision-making.
The most important attribute for a manager, however, is the ability to lead people. This involves creating and communicating a vision for the future, motivating employees to achieve this and fostering an environment where everyone is working towards the same goal. It can be a difficult task to navigate through different personalities and manage individual expectations but it is a skill that is essential for success in the business world.

Assignment Task 4: Develop critical and integrative thinking abilities
There are many ways to develop critical and integrative thinking abilities. One of the best places to start is by getting an edge in your current field – take classes, read books, watch informative videos on topics relevant to your work – all in order to study critical tools for analytically exploring problems. There are also classes that specifically teach you to think critically about particular themes or technology-related technology topics. You can also rely on practicing these skills through reading informational texts, studying case studies/problems in your specific field, working with classmates in group conversations, researching different points of view on a topic etc.
This type of thinking stimulates mental activity and helps people develop analytical skills when challenged with complex or high-pressure situations. Critical thinkers are able to remain open minded, yet disciplined in their thinking. They also tend to be better problem solvers and are able to see the “bigger picture” when looking at a situation.
Developing critical thinking skills is an important part of professional and academic life, regardless of your chosen field. With a little practice, you’ll be on your way to thinking critically in no time.
Assignment Task 5: Develop problem-solving and decision-making skills
It’s important that you stay committed to seeing the project through, rather than giving up prematurely. That way, by understanding why you made your decisions and what methods you employed to solve problems along the way, there’s a greater chance of success next time! When it comes to decision-making skills, try developing an active process for identifying which problem or issue should take priority. Once you’ve identified this factor first, set out with other solutions in mind which should flow if your first solution fails. To learn more about these specific skills check out our article that explores self-evaluation for problem-solving and strategic leadership tips here on the Chamber of Commerce.
Flexibility and adaptability are also key, no matter what the circumstances may be. Don’t let distractions throw you off course either; stay focused and ensure your decisions match with your goals! Here on the Chamber of Commerce blog we’ve written plenty about time management skills and how to utilize them to achieve success in your professional and personal life.
When it comes to making decisions, it’s important to have a process in place so you’re not just flying by the seat of your pants. By taking the time to evaluate all of your options and strategize for potential problems, you’ll be able to make smarter decisions that have a higher chance of success.
Assignment Task 6: Develop oral and written communication skills
An incredible number of employers require their employees to possess many types of skills, including the ability to communicate effectively. Communication skills comprise writing and speaking, both formally and informally. Communicating effectively requires us to be mindful of our audience – we need to know what is not clear enough for them. It also means that we need to decide on a goal before we start communicating anything at all – this forces us to focus on the point that needs reaching first etc.
Becoming competent in written communication can be difficult, because it involves planning your thoughts ahead of time rather than simply saying what’s already in your head without any organization or consideration for structure or style,. Oral communication can be more frightening due to its unpredictability; there are no second drafts or re-takes. However, in both cases, a lack of preparation results is a lack of coherent communication.
For most of us, written communication is more common in our daily lives. We all have to write documents every day, letters, emails etc. Although I listed just a few key elements below, successful writing depends on the correct application of many principles combined with imagination and good judgment when it comes to your specific audience.
Assignment Task 7: Develop global and ethical perspectives in international business
International business is the process of selling and buying products, organizations, and services across international boundaries. It’s important to understand that culture matters when it comes to international business. Other than different values and preferences in a given global situation, there isn’t really a standard set of etiquette rules or diplomatic skills needed for international business. Each country has their own cultural idiosyncrasies that need to be taken into account while engaging in this form of commercial activity. You can use various tools like historical perspectives, cultural analysis reports (CARE), cultural intelligence research (ROSS Intelligence Report), cultural diagnosis (Design workshop) etc., to get insights about local cultures before entering any new territory for participation or investment purposes.
In order to do business in a foreign country, one needs to be aware of that country’s unique culture and how it can impact business dealings. There are a few key points to keep in mind when doing international business:
- Business customs and etiquette vary from country to country. It’s important to do your research and understand the customs of the country you’re doing business with so that you don’t offend anyone or damage any potential business relationships.
- In some countries, such as Japan, it’s customary to exchange business cards with everyone you meet during a social or business function. In other countries, such as Germany, exchanging business cards is reserved for professional contexts only.
- Be aware of the differences in cultures’ views on time and schedules. For example, punctuality is very important to Americans but less so to many Europeans. In other countries, such as India, it may be considered rude to arrive early or on time for a meeting.
- Be aware of the different ways that business is conducted in different countries. For example, in some countries such as Saudi Arabia, it’s customary for the man to take the lead in business negotiations, while in other countries such as China, the lead negotiator is typically the most senior person in the company.
- Be aware of the different ways that communication is interpreted in different countries. For example, in some countries such as Brazil, it’s considered very rude to speak bluntly or criticize someone publicly. In other countries, such as America, blunt communication is often seen as being honest and straightforward.
- Be aware of how business is usually conducted in different countries. For example, in some countries such as Japan, the decision-making process in a company is more democratic in nature whereas in other countries, such as Malaysia, decisions are made by one individual and then later agreed to by others.
- Be aware of the different ways that business is conducted in different countries. For example, in some countries such as China, it’s common for people to use their family name before their given name whereas in other countries such as France, using just one’s given name is customary.
