ELG355 English Assignment Sample SUSS Singapore
The course aims to give students an overview of the English language in Singapore, as well as giving them skills they can use when interviewing people who speak this type or version. The data collected from these interviews will be analyzed and described based on Hui Min’s examples given within his textbook “Singapore English” (EUP 2007).
One of the most important aspects of Singapore English is its pronunciation. In general, Singaporean English speakers have a rhotic accent – that is, they pronounce the letter ‘r’ in words like car and park. This is in contrast to the non-rhotic accents found in England and Australia, where the letter ‘rr’ is not pronounced in words like car and park.
The ECA for this course may consist of a project that builds on data gathered in TMA01 and/or TMA02. Although RESIT students have already passed OCAS, they will still submit new work as part of their Rehabilitation Electrical Training (RET) curriculum – but these individuals might need to find additional information about the specific requirement from AF or programme team members before beginning research projects involving those courses’ requirements.
OCAS is the Ordinary Course in Singapore English and it is required for all students who want to learn this language. The ECA for this course may consist of a project that builds on data gathered in TMA01 and/or TMA02. Assignment Brief 1:Appraise the status of Singapore English and the range of attitudes towards Singapore English
The status of Singapore English is generally positive, with most people recognizing it as a distinct and separate dialect from both British and American English. There is a wide range of attitudes towards it, however, with some people feeling very positively about it and others preferring to use more standard forms of English. Overall, though, Singapore English is widely used and respected throughout the country.
There are a few things that make Singapore English unique. Firstly, it has been heavily influenced by both British and American English, so it shares features of both dialects. Additionally, Singapore is a multicultural country with several different languages spoken, so Singapore English has also absorbed words and phrases from other languages. This makes it particularly distinct and interesting to listen to.
Some people love Singapore English and feel very proud of it. They think it sounds cool and modern, and they enjoy using all the different words and phrases that are unique to the dialect. Others find it difficult to understand, or they think it sounds too informal. They prefer to use standard British or American English instead.
Assignment Brief 2:Illustrate the variability in varieties of English in Singapore
There is great variability in the varieties of English spoken in Singapore. Singlish, for example, is a heavily creolized form of English that includes influences from Chinese and Malay. Other varieties of English spoken in Singapore include Standard Singaporean English, Indian English, and Chinese Englishes. Each of these varieties has its own phonology, grammar, and vocabulary. The different varieties of English spoken in Singapore are a result of the country’s diverse linguistic and cultural heritage.
The variety of English spoken in Singapore is also influenced by the country’s contact with other languages. The government, for example, has been trying to promote Standard Singaporean English as the official language of the country. This has resulted in a situation where many people are bilingual or multilingual, and where different varieties of English are used in different contexts. For example, Standard Singaporean English is used in formal settings, while Singlish is used informally. Indian English is used by Indian immigrants, and Chinese Englishes are used by speakers of various Chinese dialects.

Assignment Brief 3:Propose how the demonstrated variability in Singapore Englishes might be modeled
It is possible that the variability in Singapore Englishes might be modelled. This means that the different Englishes spoken in Singapore might be influenced by the way people speak English in other countries.
This is because people are increasingly exposed to a wider range of English dialects through television, films, and the internet. As a result, they may start to use certain features of these dialects when they speak English. So the Singaporean version of English may gradually become more similar to the versions spoken in other countries.
It is also possible that the variability in Singapore Englishes might not be modelled. This means that the different Englishes spoken in Singapore might not be influenced by the way people speak English in other countries.
This could be because people in Singapore are already very familiar with a wide range of English dialects, so they don’t need to borrow features from other dialects when they speak English. As a result, the Singaporean version of English may remain quite different from the versions spoken in other countries.
So there is no definite answer to this question. It is something that needs further research to determine which of the two possibilities is more likely to happen.
Assignment Brief 4:Collect naturally occurring speech samples
To collect naturally occurring speech samples, you can use a recording device to record people speaking in various settings or transcribe speech from video footage. You can also simply ask people for permission to record them speaking. If you’re looking for a more specific type of speech, such as child-directed speech, you can try searching for videos or transcripts that include that type of speech. Once you have your recordings or transcriptions, you can then annotate them to catalog different features of the speech. Finally, you can use these annotated speech samples to train machine learning models that can then be used to automatically transcribe new speech samples.
With enough data, automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems can be trained to transcribe speech with high accuracy. However, collecting enough natural speech data for training can be challenging. One way to collect data is to use a recording device to record people speaking in various settings. This can include recordings of people having conversations in a natural environment, giving speeches, or even reading aloud. You can also transcribe speech from video footage. If you’re looking for a more specific type of speech, such as child-directed speech, you can try searching for videos or transcripts that include that type of speech.

Assignment Brief 5:Use computer software to transcribe naturally occurring speech
There are a number of different computer software programs that can be used to transcribe speech. Some of the most popular programs include Dragon Naturally Speaking and Talk Typer.
Both of these programs are designed to convert spoken words into text, and they work by recognizing the patterns of sounds that make up words. This allows them to accurately transcribe speech even if it is spoken at a rate that is faster or slower than normal.
Talk Typer also offers a number of additional features, including the ability to translate speech into multiple languages and to create custom keyboard shortcuts for common phrases.
Assignment Brief 6:Analyze the speech in detail
Every great speech has several key components that come together to create a powerful and moving message. To analyze a speech, you need to look at the content of the message, the delivery of the speaker, and how the audience responds.
The content of the speech will be what is actually being said – the words that are chosen to communicate the main ideas. When you analyze this aspect of a speech, you want to pay attention to both what is being said and how it is being said. The language should be clear and concise, and it should support the overall theme of the speech.
The delivery refers to how the speaker presents him or herself and delivers the speech. This includes everything from body language to vocal tone.

First, start by Familiarizing yourself with the different types of data (e.g. quantitative, qualitative, categorical, etc.). Once you understand the different types of data, begin practicing ways to describe them in both written and oral formats.
