2.Evaluate the potential consequences of identified hazards;

“The consequences of hazards are the foreseeable undesirable effects that are expected to result from an event.” Physical consequences include illness, injury, death or loss of property.

Such events can be short-term (minutes, hours) or long-term (weeks). In either case they will be managed by response organizations and first responders. Acknowledging these visible results and managing them appropriately is part of a response plan for an organization.

A hazard analysis would take into consideration all people threatened by the identified risk and their proximity in time and space to minimize the likelihood and adverse impacts associated with it.

The evaluation should help provide context on its probability of occurrence – how likely this scenario may occur in a given location over a prescribed time frame. This will be shaped by the frequency and severity of incidents that have occurred under similar circumstances (e.g. a historic fire or explosion in a building).

Hazards can be eliminated by preventing the scenario that could produce harm. There are two types of prevention, which are engineering and administrative:

1) Engineering prevention would be to have all hazardous materials in a designated area (away from any sensitive or valuable areas)

2) Administrative Prevention usually comes in the form of legislation limiting how much of a specific hazardous material is allowed to be used. It should also mandate the type and amount of safety equipment for employees who work with these materials or at risk of being harmed by them while conducting their job duties.

The goal for minimizing risks is either to reduce hazard severity if it cannot be totally eliminated, control exposure if it is impossible to eliminate the chance of being harmed from a hazard, control the way employees react to hazards that can’t be controlled and lastly communicate effectively with workers in order to help them follow procedures correctly.
