What does “Sexual orientation” mean?

The term “Sexual Orientation” is often confused with gender or gender identity. However, these terms are not even close to each other. Someone’s sexual orientation means who they are attracted to and want to have a relationship with.

Moreover, almost everyone is aware of the different sexual orientations. We commonly refer to them as LGBTQ. This is an acronym, that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer. These are the common names for the different orientations. However, in technical terminology, we can divide this different sexual orientation into five categories:

  • Heterosexual: Attracted to people of the opposite sex
  • Bisexual: Attracted to people of either sex
  • Homosexual: Attracted to people of one’s own sex
  • Pansexual: Attracted to people of any gender identity
  • Asexual: Not sexually attracted to other people

Moving on, in the context of our discussion we hall be looking at sexual orientation in the workplace in the next section of the sample essay.

Sexual orientation in the workplace

In this section of the sample essay, we shall be discussing sexual orientation in the workplace. Now, one might assume that someone’s sexual orientation might affect their performance, productivity, or other work-related aspects. However,  this is not the case. A person’s orientation does not affect their normal functions at work at all.

There is no difference in their productivity, performance, communication, and so on. In fact, it’s quite difficult to assume someone’s sexuality just by appearance. Despite this, there are several stereotypes related to the same. This brings us to the topic of discrimination based on someone’s sexual orientation in the Singapore workplace.

Discrimination in workplace

Now, most of us are already familiar with discrimination based on sexual orientation. In fact, someone has even witnesses at some point in their life. Similarly, this problem of discrimination is a huge issue in the workplace. Despite the various laws and regulations by the Singapore government, this social evil prevails.

Usually, people with non-traditional sexuality have to be the center of unwanted attention. In addition, LGBTQ is also treated differently. People in a workplace backed by social stereotypes treat them like lesser beings. In fact, harassment is also a common issue for LGBTQs.

Consequently, they do not get equal opportunities in the workplace. This leads them to develop several psychological and social issues. For the same reason, people often prefer to hide their sexuality. This gives us a brief view of the situation of LGBTQs in the workplace.

Conclusion:

Sexuality is a natural part of being human, and it should be accepted in the workplace. We must all work to create a more inclusive environment where people can feel safe enough to reveal their true selves without judgment or fear for their safety. As an employer, you have the power to lead by example and make your company one that empowers individuality rather than shames difference.
